Curcumin and Liver Health

Turmeric seems to be all the rage in the healthy supplement world at the moment. You can find it in products from kombucha to a myriad of capsules and pills. The reason is largely due to the active ingredient curcumin.

Curcumin has been found to benefit many systems in the body because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and other properties. Specific for liver health, the following results were found in people who took a supplement containing 1000 mg of turmeric over an 8 week period: reduced levels of liver fat, reduction of body weight, reduction of high liver enzyme levels, lowered cholesterol, reduced waist circumference, and more.

Spicing up your food with curries and other curcumin-containing spices may be helpful, but the concentrations just aren’t enough. Supplementing would probably be necessary to achieve the therapeutic results.
